Company Background

Tony’s Meats is currently owned and operated by the senior management team Lenita Hanson, Dan MacGillivray and Aaron Tingley. They purchased the business in September 2015 from a small group of farmers who previously owned the business since August 2007. Tony’s Meats was founded in 1963 and by 1976, upgraded the red meat processing facility to adhere to the Federal Inspection program for the production of fresh pork, beef, and lamb. In 1984, the business addressed the need to become value added and started the production of fresh sausages, and two years later expanded this line to include bacon, hams, cooked deli meats, and cooked sausages. In 1987, the business launched the Tony’s brand name and expanded its presence throughout North-eastern Nova Scotia. Tony’s Meats underwent a 12,425 square foot expansion in order to accommodate our growth in nthe processing segment. In 2005, Tony’s Meats acquired The Original Mr. DonairTM brand to position the company for growth in this locally significant but nationally unknown meat category. In 2007, Tony retired and sold the company to a small group of farmers who wanted to see the business continue to bring employment and opportunity to Nova Scotians. In 2013, Tony’s Meats became the first (and currently only) federally inspected meat processing facility in Nova Scotia to achieve Safe Quality Food (SQF) Certification under the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). In 2015 the business obtained its Halal certification and is now co packing a number of Halal certified Brands and is working to launch its own line of Halal products in the very near future.
